How to play Sudoku

Sudoku is a logic puzzle, not a math test. You never add or multiply anything.

The goal

Fill all 81 squares using the digits 1 to 9 so every row, every column, and every 3×3 box contains each digit once. The bold lines show the boxes.

Finding your first number

Choose an empty square. Check which digits already appear in its row, column, and box. A digit that already appears in any of those three places cannot go there. Some squares will have only one possibility.

Useful tools

Dark numbers are fixed clues. Green numbers are yours. Tap Notes before entering small possible digits. Erase removes your entry, Undo reverses a move, Check highlights incorrect answers, and Hint fills one square correctly.

Daily challenge

Daily challenge offers one medium puzzle per UTC calendar day, identical for all players. Finishing it counts toward your daily streak, even if you used a hint. Your progress stays only in this browser.

Sudoku game guide

Play free Sudoku on Play Porch with three difficulty levels, a daily challenge, pencil notes, hints, undo and saved progress on your device.

How to Play

Choose Classic for Easy, Medium or Hard, or play the Daily challenge. Select an empty square and use the number buttons or keys 1–9. Arrow keys move the selection.

Turn on Notes to record possible digits. Erase clears the selected entry or notes; Undo reverses a move. Ctrl or Command plus Z undoes, and Shift plus that shortcut redoes. Check highlights wrong entries; Hint supplies one correct number.

Pause hides the board and stops the clock. Your puzzles, notes and move history are saved in this browser, so you can return later. Clearing browser data removes these saves.

Rules

Fill every row, column and outlined 3×3 box with 1 through 9, using each number exactly once in each unit. The starting clues cannot be changed. Every supplied puzzle has one solution.

Conflicts highlight repeated numbers in a row, column or box. A number can still be incorrect without causing an immediate conflict; Check compares your entries with the solution. Hints are counted, even if their moves are undone.

Daily offers the same Medium puzzle to everyone using this puzzle bank on a given UTC date. It changes at 00:00 UTC. Completing consecutive daily puzzles builds a local streak; using hints still counts. Classic difficulty is approximate and uses 42, 33 or 27 starting clues.

Strategy & Tips

Begin with rows, columns or boxes that are almost complete. For an empty square, eliminate numbers already present in its three units.

Look for a number that has only one possible position in a box. Pencil notes help you keep track of candidates, but you must update those notes as the board changes.

Work from deductions rather than guesses. If you lose track, Undo lets you revisit a move, while Check and Hint can help you understand where you went wrong.
