THE GAME GUIDE

Sea Battle

Arrange ten ships on a 10×10 grid and battle the computer. Ships cannot touch, even diagonally, and every hit earns another shot.

How to Play

Begin with the random fleet or press Randomize for a new arrangement. Select a ship from the menu, then tap its new starting square. You can also drag a ship to a new starting square. Click a selected ship again or use Rotate selected to turn it around its starting square. Invalid moves leave it in place.

Press Start battle when ready. You shoot first: choose a square in Enemy waters. Columns run A–J and rows 1–10. Use arrow keys to move between squares and Enter or Space to select one. Your waters show the computer’s shots.

A hit gives the same player another shot; a miss passes the turn. A cross marks a hit, a dot marks a miss, and a darker cross marks a sunken ship. Sink the entire opposing fleet to win. New game starts a fresh setup.

Rules

Each player has ten straight ships: one aircraft carrier of four squares, two battleships of three squares each, three submarines of two squares each, and four patrol boats of one square each. That is twenty occupied squares on each 10×10 board.

Ships may be placed horizontally or vertically, never diagonally. They must stay inside the board and cannot overlap or touch another ship, including at a corner. There must always be at least one square between ships.

A ship sinks when every one of its squares has been hit. Previously fired squares cannot be fired on again. Hits, including sinking shots, grant another shot unless that shot ends the game. The first player to sink all ten opposing ships wins.

The computer’s fleet stays hidden until the battle ends. Its targeting uses previous hits and misses, without inspecting your unhit ship positions. Fleet arrangements cannot change after battle begins.

Strategy & Tips

Spread early shots across the board, then test the horizontal and vertical neighbors of a hit. Once you find the direction of a longer ship, follow that line to finish it.

The gap rule provides useful clues: squares directly alongside or diagonally adjacent to a sunken ship cannot contain another ship. Save your shots for places that can still hold one.

Do not rely only on a checkerboard search. Four patrol boats occupy just one square each and can hide in either color of a checkerboard. As larger ships sink, look for isolated unexplored squares.

About This Game

Sea Battle, also known as Battleship and Sjóorrusta in Icelandic, is a hidden-fleet strategy game descended from pen-and-paper play. This edition uses a ten-ship fleet, a strict no-touching rule, and extra shots for hits. Play locally against the computer with no account or download required.
